Summer Term 2002

PHILOSOPHY THROUGH THE AGES
PART II

If you wish to refer to any previous terms' readings, you can find them by clicking HERE for the autumn 2000 sessions, HERE for winter 2001, HERE for summer 2001, HERE for autumn 2001 (last autumn) and HERE for last term.
WELCOME BACK to the Dead Philosophers' Society and to the last term that I shall be running it.

Last term's survey of philosophy through the ages proved a success and so we shall be continuing it this term. The emphasis will be on modern philosophy (though all philosophers will be quite properly dead) and on the 20th century in particular. We will try to tell the story of each philosopher's life and loves, as well as his philosophy, perhaps in deference to Nietzche's view that 'all philosophy hitherto has been a confession on the part of its author'! Since my own speciality is existentialism, I shall be presenting Kierkegaard and Nietzsche, as preludes to the 20th century, then Sartre and Wittgenstein (whose relationship with existentialism is very interesting). Mr Lawson will be dealing with other philosophers.

We look forward, as always, to stimulating Tuesday nights and hope that some of you will send comments or longer thoughts to post on these pages!
