WHY DO WE NEED COMPANY?

Web links :
This week I take a break (though I shall be there) and Renata will take command of the session. Please try to be there and to support her with views and controversy!

The question she will be asking is why we need company. This presupposes the question : do we need company? You may not agree with her that we do. If you agree, is company an essential part of our existence as human beings or merely something we have become contingently dependent upon?

Some philosophers - notably Peter Strawson - have defined what it is to be a person in terms of relationships (we touched on this last week when we considered that different environments bring out different aspects of our characters). Is it possible to be a person and not to have relationships with others? Are certain kinds of relationship beneficial and others detrimental? Is there a true 'me' which the right company can bring out?

More than this I do not want to say - I leave the rest to Renata.

If anyone else would like to lead a session one evening, please let me know. I can help you with finding information or with ideas and you can lead the session wherever you feel it should go.
