SEVEN
POINTS OF VIEW
Web links : GP'S POWERPOINT
For the last week of the term we take a synoptic look at seven different views of the world. The powerpoint presentation linked to above is what I shall use in the session, but it is probably pretty useless on its own, even if you can read my scrawly handwriting. Nevertheless, since I have nothing better to offer, you may click on it if you wish (or save it to disk). At 242k you may prefer to leave it alone.
The powerpoint presentation briefly and wildly inaccurately summarises some viewpoints concerning mind and matter diagrammatically. They include Descartes' dualism, Berkeley's idealism, 'Lockean' realism, Kant's transcendental idealism, materialism, Plato's idealism and existentialism, though not in that order.
I have two questions for you:
- Which viewpoint comes closest to yours?
- Does it matter?
Personally, I do think it matters but I am not prepared to tell you why unless you come to the session and explain your own point of view. If you have a drama rehearsal, bad luck - you will never find out.
