Butterfly Page

(This site is under construction)

There are about 400 different species of butterfly in Europe, of which 50 or so can easily be seen without going very far from the school campuses of Villars. These pages are just an introduction to what you might see if you keep your eyes open - if you really want to become an expert you will also need a book and quite a lot of patience !

Why should you try to identify butterflies ? A very good reason is just that they are there, all around, throughout the summer, and most of the time most people hardly even notice them. If you start taking a closer look you will begin to discover not just butterflies but a whole world of plants and animals right on your doorstep. Take it a little more seriously and you will find that watching and identifying butterflies is art as well as a science - an enthralling activity that will give you something to do wherever you go for the rest of your life.

A little knowledge of the plants and animals around you will make walks and expeditions in the summer much more meaningful. You might also be able to string a biology project out of it and have a valid excuse for wandering around getting a tan during the exam term.
