Polyommatus humedasae distribution

Distribution

This is a very local species, flying only in the Valle d'Aosta in Italy and nowhere else. Where it does fly - at probably just three locations in the valley - it is plentiful, but the habitat is vulnerable to change (such as growing over with scrub and bushes) and so the butterfly is regarded as endangered. Like other anomalous blues it is found in grassy, flowery and generally dry places where the foodplant grows

There is no other anomalous blue in the region so identification is not a problem. The male upperside, shown rather badly in the last photo, has the rough androconial scales characteristic of all these blues. The butterfly flies in July and August and lays its eggs on sainfoin.
