This is the female of the species, which closely resembles a plain tiger, Danaus chrysippus. I found this individual flying around the street edges in Mumbai:
I also saw the male frequently in Mumbai but didn't get an opportunity to photograph one. Fred did and these are his photos:
The white patches are very conspicuous in flight.
